Woman in white dress on red carpet

Hello!
Our #MondayBlog today will bring you a list of festivals so you can stay on top of everything that will happen in 2022.

But first let's explain what a film festival is for those who are arriving now. A film festival is an event organized with the aim of presenting films both to the general public and to other audiovisual professionals. Movie theaters and even screening rooms are used for screenings to take place, and there are even some outdoor screenings.

These festivals, which are usually annual, aim to encourage, promote and publicize film production. It's a great celebration of cinema with much more than just showings of features, shorts and other films. There are also awards, honors, workshops and panel discussions.

Did you know that around 3,000 film festivals take place around the world every year? Well, in 2013 people stopped and counted.

The world's first film festival, according to history, took place in Venice in 1932, while the largest film festival in the world is in Berlin, which lasts for two weeks and has the largest attendance. In Brazil, the first film festival took place in Gramado in 1973, and this event has been held every year since then.

At the end of the day, film festivals are ways of informing what audiovisual is creating, it is a celebration of this art and also of the people who work in this medium.

And as Prospecto is passionate about audiovisual, we decided to bring you a list of some national and international film festivals, for you to write down in your agenda.

Venice Festival
The oldest in the world, The Venice International Film Festival (in Italian, Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica), is held annually in the city of Venice, Italy.

This festival, in addition to being the oldest, also ranks among the three most prestigious festivals in Europe. It takes place in late August or early September on the island of Lido and screenings take place in the historic Palazzo del Cinema and other nearby locations.

The 79th festival will take place this year from August 31 to September 10. And submissions for feature films, short films and immersive projects for the 79th Venice International Film Festival open in early February 2022.

Cannes Festival
This festival is one of the most prestigious and famous film festivals in the world, and was created in 1946 by Jean Zay.
The festival takes place every year in May in the French city of Cannes. This year the event is scheduled to take place from May 17 to May 28.

Toronto International Film Festival
TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) has been held in the City of Toronto, Canada since 1976. Traditionally this festival always starts after Labor Day in Canada, on a Thursday and lasts for ten days.
The Toronto festival has screened around 400 films throughout its existence. In 2022, save the date September 8-18, for TIFF.

Sundance Film Festival
Born in 1978, the Sundance Film Festival was known as Utah/U.S. Film Festival, but in 1985, the Sundance Institute, with the aim of helping new filmmakers incorporated the festival into their programs, leaning the festival towards independent productions.

Sundance takes place in January every year in Park City, Utah. Crowned as the largest independent film festival in the United States, in 2021 it took place virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And despite being virtual, this edition was the most viewed in the entire history of the festival.

The festival took place from the 20th to the 30th of January digitally again.

Berlin Festival
IFB, from the German Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin, is a German film festival, established in 1951 in the former West Berlin (now Berlin).
The Berlin International Film Festival, also known as the Berlinale, is considered one of the most important events in the film industry and one of the top five festivals in the world.

Its main prizes are called the Golden Bear and Silver Bear - the bear being a symbol of Berlin.
The festival has usually taken place in February since 1978, and in 2022 the dates for the festival are from the 10th to the 20th of February.

Gramado Film Festival
We arrived at Brazilian festivals and obviously the first on the list is the Gramado Festival, which began in 1973 and is, without a doubt, the best known and most popular festival.of cinema in Brazil. It usually takes place in August and is held at the Palácio dos Festivais, in the tourist town that gives the event its name.

This year's schedule, according to the blog blokerturismo, will be from August 12 to 20, however the event's production has not yet confirmed the date.

Rio Festival
When Rio Cine and Mostra Banco Nacional de Cinema came together, Rio Festival was born. honoring great names in cinema and selecting Brazilian works for Première Brasil.
It usually happens in the months of October and November, in 2020 due to the pandemic it didn't happen, but it returned in 2021 in a special edition in December, with the exhibition of films online and in some cinemas.
For 2022, no information about the festival has yet been released.

Brasilia Festival of Brazilian Cinema
It all started in 1965, and the embryo was the 1st Week of Brazilian Cinema created by the professors of the young University of Brasília Jean Claude Bernardet and Vladimir Carvalho, together with Paulo Emílio Sales Gomes. Since that date, the festival only did not take place between 1972 and 1974, due to the censorship of the military regime.

The Brasília Festival is seen as very important in the field as it shows feature films and short films of all genres produced throughout the country, in addition to distributing prizes, the main one being the Candango Trophy.
The festival is famous for its warm and extremely cinephile audience. It usually takes place in September, but has been held in November and December for the past few years.
Its 54th edition took place virtually and there is still no official information for the 55th edition.

Tiradentes Film Festival
This festival is recognized for giving space to new talents in our film production, it is a showcase for contemporary productions and it is very prestigious by critics.
It is a free event that includes previews of national feature and short films, workshops, children's shows and various art manifestations.
January is the month of this festival, in Tiradentes, Minas Gerais.

Cine PE – Audiovisual Festival
September and October are the months in which Cine PE, a film festival in Recife, takes place.
2021 was the year of its 25th edition in 2021 and, as usual, it brought together films in three competitive exhibitions: Pernambuco short film, national short film and national feature film, accepting the fiction, animation or documentary categories.

São Paulo International Film Festival
We could not fail to mention São Paulo and its film festival, which has national and international pre-releases, and which was born to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the foundation of MASP (Museu de Arte de São Paulo), in 1977.
The Mostra, despite not having the name festival in its title, is the most awaited cinematographic event of the year by São Paulo residents, also gaining more and more space in the circuit outside the city center and has free programming.
The Exhibition is usually held in October, always close to the Festival do Rio, creating a double of the Rio-SP axis of important festivals in Brazil.

So, what did you think of our list? Powerful isn't it?

Now if your focus is feature film competition, the festivals that should get your attention are the festivals in Berlin, Cairo, Cannes, Goa, Karlovy Vary, Locarno, Mar del Plata, Montreal, Moscow, San Sebastián, Shanghai, Tallinn, Tokyo, Venice and Warsaw.
These festivals are accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) in the feature film category.
