People love to be entertained, want proof of that? Follow the money, the entertainment industry moves more than $2 trillion a year worldwide, with Brazil accounting for around 40 billion of that amount, according to the 18th Global Entertainment and Media Survey 2017-2021 .
Movies, TV series, theater, musicals, concerts, books….after a hard day at work, distracting your head a little is so good, isn't it?
But for the general public, often, the difficulties and the often long process of creating a film, so that they can watch it from the comfort of their home, do not even cross their minds.
Now, dear producers, let's face it, you have to be very passionate to go on until the blessed day of seeing your work ready, leaving the oven of creation after hours, days, months, sometimes years of difficulties and unforeseen events!< br>
And there are so many unforeseen events! And accidents! And diseases!
Accidents are commonplace, but it is very difficult to get exact numbers, it is estimated that more than 40 people died on film sets in the US between 1990 and 2016.
In addition to death, fractures are very common injuries, especially when we look at stunt people in this field.
That's why Prospecto is here, to take your hand, throughout this process and give you all the support you need, from idea conception to project launch... and, if the worst happens, we'll be on your side too .
Don't take unnecessary risks and protect yourself from the unexpected, and speaking of risks, we've selected 10 of the worst accidents at movie sets in decades.
1. Twilight Zone: The Movie
This 1982 case is famous, horrendous, and one of the drivers of the need for security within a movie set. For the first time in the history of cinema there was a lawsuit related to accidents in the audiovisual industry in which a film director faced a lawsuit due to the consequences of the events of his work, and it’s no wonder.
What happened was a tragedy, during the shooting of one of the film's final scenes, and it involved a helicopter, a Hollywood veteran (Vic Morrow) and two children (Renee Chen and Myca Dinh Le).
The helicopter crashed during filming and the three actors died instantly. Dinh Le, one of the children, and Morrow were decapitated by the helicopter's main rotor blades and Chen was crushed by the aircraft's right-hand skid.
2. The Crow
In 1994, towards the end of filming the film, the character of actor Brandon Lee, should be shot and die. The problem is that the weapon used was loaded with real bullets, and the actor died from bullet yeast in his abdomen.
As of today, no one knows what actually happened to the footage of the actor's death.
3. Jumper
During the filming of this 2008 film, a large piece of frozen sand broke off one of the walls of the set, killing set designer David Ritchie by falling on his head and injuring two other production workers.
4. Troy
George Camilleri, a stuntman in the 2004 film, seriously fractured his leg during filming. During his stay at the hospital, there were complications, the stuntman had a heart attack and died.
It was concluded that George's death was directly related to the shootings he participated in.
5. The Return of the Musketeers
During the filming of a scene from this 1989 film, actor Roy Kinnear had an accident while falling from his horse, which resulted in a severe pelvic fracture that led to his death.
6. Top Gun, 1986
Fighter pilot Art Scholl was supposed to do a sequence of stunts in the air, but the plane he was piloting crashed into the sea right at the start of the maneuvers and to this day, even after the pilot's death, the cause of the accident has never been clarified.
7. Mission: Impossible - Fallout
Actor Tom Cruise broke his ankle after hitting a building, shooting a certain scene, over and over, even with adequate protection.
8. The Walking Dead
In 2017, stuntman Bernecker fell from a height of 30 feet onto a concrete floor and didn’t survive his injuries.
9. Deadpool 2
In her first film, during her first scene, stuntwoman Joi Harris died when she lost control of her motorcycle and collided with a glass window, in 2017.
10. Sin Miedo a la verdad
The actors of the TV series of Televisa Jorge Navarro Sanchez and Luis Gerardo Rivera, died during the filming rehearsal of the third season of the series. The actors fell off a bridge.
Did you already know about these accidents and deaths?
Let me vent a little. It is much easier to find articles about audiovisual accidents that occur abroad, unfortunately in Brazil, these news are rarely worthy of notice in the media. And when they do appear, we don't know what, where or how the situation was resolved.
Sometimes we think that because we don't hear about it, there is no accident on our land, on our film sets, a big mistake!
Any movie set is an environment prone to accidents, just look around and see all the lights, cables and suspended equipment, to know that all it takes is one slip, one wrong move and everything can collapse.
So producer, technician, director, are you going to produce art?
Consider the audiovisual insurance, with coverage for LC (civil liability), Misc. (equipment and miscellaneous risks) and PA (personal accidents). That way, your project won't turn into a nightmare, or a tremendous headache.
